Stepping out the front door of The Cakehouse brings you directly onto the Ebor Way. A 70 mile long distance footpath from Helmsley, North Yorkshire to Ilkley, West Yorkshire, via the city of York. It takes its name from Eboracum, the Roman name for York.
If 70 miles isn't what you had in mind for your tranquil, relaxing weekend away there is a lovely 6k round route along an old railway line heading through Hovingham. A perfect excuse for a midway rest for a cold beer at the local hotel or a delicious coffee and scone at our local bakery, Hovingham bakery.
We also have Gilling lakes heading in the other direction which boasts gorgeous lakeside walks in all seasons. You can walk from The Cakehouse (about 8k) or you can take the car up and park nearby. Again, perfectly situated is a public house half way, The Fairfax Arms which is a lovely stop for lunch in the beer garden or by the open fire in the Winter.
